After having a good cry, Sabrina Alvarez and Charlotte Bannister, the admin crew, as they were fondly known as, helped in any way that they could. They handled incoming calls, assisted numerous grief counselors who had arrived on campus, press request for interviews, and they made flight arrangement for the general’s wife as a courtesy. They also made certain that there were plenty of coffee and fresh donuts on hand.

The following day the general met with the parents of the gunned down cadets and later with the parents of all the other cadets. Both were an emotional gathering but in the end, the parents were overwhelmingly in support of keeping the academy open, including Private Donald Strong’s mother. They had seen what the program had instilled in their boys. And then there were the letters and texts from their sons telling them how much they loved being at the academy.

Later in the day, the general met with members of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the sponsor of the grant program. Like most politicians, some of them were ready to fold up the tents and head for the hills but the general had preempted this by bringing two busloads of parents with him to the meeting. When he needed them, he had them ushered inside where they impressed upon the businessmen turned politicians to keep the program going. Also in strong support of keeping the academy open were chamber members Charles Browning and John Barnett. Their influence carried a lot of weight. With that matter settled, all that was left to do was to visit Private Raymond Chancellor at the hospital. He had been hit three times. Private Donald Strong was hit twice, fatally.

Because Private Chancellor was heavily sedated, with tubes going into his arms and mouth, the general was unable to talk to his young cadet. Bending down over him, he planted a kiss on his forehead, paused to say a prayer, talked at length with family members, then left the hospital.

Back at the academy, the senior staff sat around in their lounge looking depressed. The television was on but few eyes really focused on it.

“This just doesn’t make any damn sense,” Major Smith said in a low voice. “It just doesn’t.”

“I know,” Sgt. Benjamin Jackson replied. “I wished that I could get my hand on the shooter.”

“We will,” Chief James Wu Lee assured him.

“Damn! Damn! Damn!” Major Smith cried out as he grabbed onto a chair and started beating the floor with it, breaking it in several pieces. Almost immediately, the others in the lounge strung into action and grabbed him, as he calmed down to the point of sobbing, his head nestled on the shoulder of LtCol Sanchez. They knew that Major Smith was a battle tested and battle harden Marine and had seen some of his comrades killed in action and never broke down. It was a part of the job and everyone had to know that getting killed might happen and to them but this death really got to him.
